MTD October 2014 News/views Ziegler Tire relocates store Ziegler Tire & Supply Co. held a grand opening for its newest outlet attended by local politicians, business leaders, supplier representatives and new and long-time customers. The store was built in North Canton, Ohio, and replaces a Ziegler Tire outlet that was in the same vicinity. Three generations of Zieglers welcomed the crowd. The founding fathers — Oliver, Harold Sr., Herb and Norm — are gone, but their legacy lives on through their children, grandchildren and great grandchil- dren who work at the dealership today. The company was started in 1919 by Oliver Ziegler. Today Ziegler Tire sells consumer and commercial tires and offers auto service. The new North Canton location has 10 drive-through bays which can accommo- date cars and trucks. The Massillon, Ohio-based company is No. 47 on the Modern Tire Dealer 100 list of top independent tire dealers with 24 stores. Odell resigns from Pep Boys post Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack announced the resignation of Mike Odell from his position as CEO and president on Sept. 26, 2014. John Sweetwood was named interim CEO. Sweetwood has served on the Pep Boys' board of directors since 2002 and is currently president of Woods Investment LLC, a private real estate investment frm. Odell joined Pep Boys in September 2007 as executive vice president and chief operating offcer. He became CEO in 2008. Pep Boys posted a net loss of $273,000 on net sales of $525.8 mil- lion for the second quarter which ended on Aug. 2, 2014. K&M; Tire expands in Texas K&M; Tire Inc. has purchased Area Wholesale Tire Co.'s assets in Texas. This includes the Louisiana company's warehouse operations in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The purchase, effective Sept. 15, 2014, includes tire inventory, assets and a customer list. The three warehouses will be combined with K&M; Tire's existing opera- tions in those cities. San Antonio will be a new market for Delphos, Ohio-based K&M; Tire. Baton Rouge-based Area Wholesale Tire will continue to operate its warehouses in Louisiana and New Mexico. Tire Kingdom opens TBC Corp. opened a Tire Kingdom outlet in Jacksonville, Fla. TBC operates 18 Tire Kingdom stores in the Jacksonville market and 258 Tire Kingdom stores in Florida. The eight-bay outlet stores over 1,300 tires and features TBC's "store of the future" look. Pirelli is in global index For the second straight year, Pirelli & C. SpA is the only tire company in the Global Compact 100 sustainability index. The stock index was launched in 2013. R&D; center is operating Giti Tire Group says it assembled a tire design and development team at the Giti Tire R&D; Center for North America in less than one year. The new facility is near Akron, Ohio, in Uniontown, which also is the home of Modern Tire Dealer. Giti operates five tech centers around the globe. Software registers tires Bolt On Technology LLC has added a consumer tire registration feature to its Report Pro shop management add-on software. The company says the software automatically populates and makes tire registration a "one-click deal." Wegmann earns quality award Wegmann automotive USA Inc., a wheel balance weight OEM supplier in North America, has received the General Motors 2014 Supplier Quality Excellence Award. Wegmann automotive manufactures the Hofmann Power Weight and Perfect Equipment wheel weight brands. Conference date set Smithers Rapra Inc. will host the Traction 2015: Driving the Tire Industry Forward conference and exhibition May 20-22, 2015, in Nashville, Tenn.
