MTD March 2017 We are always there for our dealers Globetrotting keeps us, and therefore you, informed F rank Bolt was up on stage talking about his late father, John Bolt Jr., who was being inducted into the North Carolina Tire Dealers Association Hall of Fame. e elder Bolt was entering the hall with Leonard Turnage, with whom he had started Interstate Tire Co. in 1964. Out of the blue, Frank talked about a story that had appeared in Modern Tire Dealer before his father had died. He referenced some of his dad's quotes to illustrate his father's business philosophy, and his strong relationship with Turnage. I wrote that story (pictured at right) in 1987, shortly before John Bolt passed away. Hearing his son talk about my story was a strong reminder of how long I had been in the tire industry, and the importance of what we do. e Modern Tire Dealer staff oen aends events in case you can't aend or aren't invited. (If you aren't a dealer who sells the Goodyear brand, why would the company invite you to a dealer meeting?) We not only report on what was said that affects all dealers, but also ask about what was not said. Admiedly, we have a lot of fun along the way. e early part of the year is always busy for MTD's editorial staff and Publisher Greg Smith, with dealer meetings seemingly scheduled every week. Recently, Senior Editor Ann Neal aended the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S launch in Palm Springs, Calif.; the General Altimax Arctic 12 event near Montreal, Quebec; and the new BFGoodrich winter tire introduction in Oawa (Ann will be an honorary French Canadian before the year is over). Senior Editor and Digital Projects Editor Joy Kopcha visited with retail tire dealers hosted by K&M Tire Inc. in Kansas City, Kan .; Point S/Tire Factory Inc. in Phoenix; and American Tire Distributors Inc. (Tire Pros) in New Orleans. Managing Editor Lori Mavrigian flew to Hawaii to cover the Tire Industry Association Off-the-Road Tire Conference . And Greg Smith just returned from the grand opening of the new Apollo Tyres Ltd. plant in Budapest, Hungary. His interview with Focus on Modern Tire Dealer "Autonomous vehicles are decades away from becoming reality," said Bob Ulrich at the North Carolina Tire Dealers Association's new Expo Forum. Ulrich moderated the lively panel of four independent tire dealers, including 2016 Tire Dealer of the Year Alpio Barbara. 22
